High School Start Time Everyday, Monday through Friday, students have to be seated in class by 7:25 a.m. If not, minutes of valuable instruction are lost. In addition, valuable instruction time lost even when students are seated because they are not well rested to receive the instruction. Students rushing to school tired and not alert is another concern. Pushing back the starting time could be the answer to these concerns. This simple solution could also set students up for success. The start bell rings at 7:25. If your even one minute late you could miss up to ten minutes or more of instruction and in addition you are assigned detention during smart lunch the following day. Now you missed instruction, the class has been disrupted and you are discombobulated when you get in the room thinking what did I miss, what the teacher is teaching doesn’t make sense to you because you missed the beginning and you can’t come to get help because you will be assigned lunch detention. It’s a lose, lose situation. Now for the students in class. Are they well rested and receiving the instruction? Research says teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep. That means high schoolers would have to get to bed by 8 if they were getting the full 10 hours. Is that happening? Probably not. Teenage bodies are wired to stay up late and sleep in. Why is everyone fighting it? Drivers rushing into the parking lot, rushing at the corner of Pinecrest and Country trail is another reason the later start time should go into effect. Kids are driving fast because they are in a hurry to get to school risking their lives and others. Is this safe? Dr. Mutillo and other school principals would argue that tardy students need to receive consequences for their actions. I agree, but does missing more instruction make sense? Maybe detention in the class you were late for, but not missing more. He would also say that the start time for school should remain the same time because if all three schools started at the same time getting to and from school would be very crowded and chaotic. Young children naturally wake up earlier, so switching the start time with the elementary school may work for everyone. Switching the start time with the elementary school would be an easy solution. Young children are wired to wake up earlier and the routes are already in place. The benefits of the later start times could increase the instruction students receive, be more aligned with how their bodies are made and improve safety for everyone. It’s a win, win for everyone involved. Timed Writing Number 2
In Eudora Welty’s, “One Writer’s Beginning” she talks a lot about her love of reading and described the librarian, Mrs. Calloway, as a dragon and a witch to show her persistence and passion for reading. Throughout Welty’s passage she talks about Mrs. Calloway, the librarian. In her writing, Welty uses imagery and personification to portray the intensity of Mrs. Calloway. She also continuously talks about reading and the library to demonstrate how much she values reading. Whenever Eudora mentions Mrs. Calloway, she says things like dragon’s eye or a witch. I feel that she does this to make the readers afraid of the librarian, just like the kids in the library were. In lines 36-44, as Welty is telling us Mrs. Calloway’s rules in the library, you can feel how intense and scary Mrs. Calloway is. At the beginning Eudora also mentions that, Mrs. Calloway has signs everywhere in the library that say silence in big block letters. This also portrays the librarians intensity and seriousness. Even though Welty was afraid of Mrs. Calloway that didn’t stop her from going to the library to checkout books. Throughout the passage you can conclude that Eudora loves reading and the library. She talks about reading her library books as soon as she got home from the library. Welty was very passionate about and doesn’t let Mrs. Calloway get in her way. The language that Eudora uses to describe this passion shows that she can never get enough of reading. She uses words like devouring and insatiability to show how she reads her books immediately and quickly. She uses insatiability to show that she is unsatisfied when she comes to the end of a book. Welty’s use of language when talking about reading demonstrates her passion and love of reading which proceeds to show how much she values reading and the library. During her passage, Welty uses imagery and words like dragon’s eye, witch and insatiability to show the intensity and value of her experiences in the library and at home. Welty uses these words to portray to the reader that she loved reading and would devour/ read each book she checked out of the library as soon as she got home. The insatiability would be the feeling she got after she finished reading a book because she never wanted it to end. Eudora Welty wished to read forever and she wished the books never came to an end. Welty was very passionate about the library and reading. She valued them immensely. |
